STATEWIDE INDEPENDENT LIVING COUNCIL

Leadership Development & Advocacy Committee

Members Present:  Christina Battista; Kristen Connors; Margarita Grome; Jean Lawlor; Anna Liebenow (speaker phone); Jason Pisano; Heidi Showstead; Mary E. Wambach, Chairperson of the Leadership Development and Advocacy Committee.

Staff:  Camille Pansa, Executive Director; Lisel Rockwood, Program Assistant.

Interpretor: Michele Neiley.

 

1.       Welcome/Introductions:  Mary Wambach welcomed all.  

  1. Review and Approval of July Minutes:  previously sent. A motion was made by Kristen Connors and seconded by Heidi Showstead to accept the minutes as written. Vote passed unanimously. 
  2. ADA Celebration review:  Everyone thought this event was a big success and there was a lot of energy in the room discussing a future 2010 event which will be the 20th Year Celebration of the ADA. The date of the event will be Saturday, July 24, 2010. Ideas, comments, and suggestions included:

Ø     More activities to draw people in

Ø     Limit amount of speakers

Ø     Use same venue, but hot/sunny under the dome

Ø     Plan early

Ø     Establish planning committee

Ø     Collaborate with other organizations

Ø     Comedian or more interactive entertainment

Ø     Greeters

Ø     Demonstrations, such as assistive technology

Ø     Service dogs

Ø     Invite Congressman Langevin, (formal letter of request)

Ø     Store discounts/raffles at Vendor tables

Ø     Karaoke machine

Ø     Displays, such as Top Draw

 

4.  Independent Living conference: The conference brochure is now    available and will be send out to everyone. The SILC will sponsor 10     Council members; scholarships are also available. Kristen Connors, Anna    Liebenow, and Camille Pansa volunteered to be workshop panelists. All         were encouraged to attend.

  1. Disability History Week 2009: Jean Lawlor will draft a press release concerning disability history week which will be sent out to the media the prior to the third week in October.
  2. Goals for 2010: The 2009 goals were reviewed. Some ideas for 2010 were: 
  3. Educational Presentation for Annual: Top Drawer will present at the Annual. Mary Wambach will contact them concerning their art display.
  4. Youth Leadership Update: Heidi Showstead reported that the luncheon was ‘beautiful’ and the resource guides were well received. She was able to interact with six students and do some recruiting as well. She thanked Jean Lawlor and Jason Pisano for their donations to the goodie bags.  
  5. RIPTA/SRC Updates:  no updates at this time.
