STATEWIDE INDEPENDENT LIVING COUNCIL

Leadership Development & Advocacy Committee

Monday, October 19, 2009

Members Present:  Christina Battista (speaker phone); Rui Goncalves; Margarita Grome; Anna Liebenow (speaker phone), Co-Chair; Christianne Montoya; Heidi Showstead; Vanessa Volz; Mary E. Wambach, Co-Chair.

Staff:  Camille Pansa, Executive Director.

1.       Welcome new members and Introductions:  Mary Wambach introduced three new members and welcomed all. Self-introductions were made.  

  1. Review and approval of September minutes:  previously sent. A motion was made by Heidi Showstead and seconded by Christianne Montoya to accept the minutes as written. Vote passed unanimously. 
  2. Goals and Initiatives, workshops for 2010:  Mary Wambach reviewed the suggested list of 2010 initiatives. Members voted and the list was prioritized as follows:

Ø     ADA 20th Celebration

Ø     Mental Health Advocacy

Ø     Disability History Week Bill & Curriculum

Ø     RIVER

Ø     Global Waiver

      Workshop ideas include:

Ø      Legislative Education

Ø      Disability Symposium

Ø      Mental Health Education

      The committee also agreed to remain vigilant about all the options which        were voted for including Olmstead Plan and Shared Living as well as being responsive to new issues as they arise.

  1. Disability History Week/press release: tabled. Jean Lawlor, Camille Pansa, and Lisel Rockwood will continue to work on the release.
  2. Annual meeting/educational presentation: Starting next year, the educational presentation will be moved back to the business meeting portion of the event.
  3. Statewide Issues/concerns: discussed with the initiatives in #3.  
  4. RIPTA/SRC Updates: Anna Liebenow has a DVD about RIPTA riders. The on-line link will be sent out to all. The film is not captioned and is not accessible. Although it was produced by a private citizen, it is being marketed by RIPTA. Captioning options were discussed such as WGBH (Public TV) in Boston.
  5. RIVER updates: no update.

 

 

  1. UPDATE on Mental Health issue: Heidi Showstead is in contact with Tony Pierre to set up another sub-committee meeting. Vanessa Volz stated the lack of residential options for people with mental health issues.
  2. Announcements: none.
  3. Old Business: none.
  4. New Business: none.
